Dementia Care University
Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or related dementia can be complicated and confusing when trying to sort out legal, medical and financial information. The Alzheimer’s Alliance of Northeast Texas turned to the Texas Bar Foundation in the fall of 2021 as a first-time grant applicant for assistance in promoting a comprehensive education program on the complicated legal issues surrounding dementia. With an $11,576 grant from Texas Bar Foundation, the Alliance implemented Dementia Care University – Legal. It is a comprehensive education program for caregivers and persons living with dementia.
Below is a video interview of the program. Please note the event mentioned is a past event, not an upcoming event.
Dementia Care University – Legal topics include estate planning, elder abuse, long term care planning, guardianship, financial planning, and Medicaid info. Through the grant the Alliance provides individual and family case management and counseling, web-based education, and in-person workshops, including a Law School Lunch conference. The project goal is to educate at least 1,000 individuals annually.
“We are so pleased with what we have developed with the generous grant from the Texas Bar Foundation. We have created a printed and online legal guide for families, with guidance and feedback from caregivers, social workers, elder law attorneys, and the US Attorneys Eastern District of Texas Office. Our July “Law School Lunch” event was filled to capacity, and we already have more registered for the next event …. At these events, caregivers of a loved one with dementia learn the ins and outs of how to navigate the legal system and avoid pitfalls from an elder law attorney. We feel that the community has expressed a deep need for this information, and we are grateful to the Texas Bar Foundation for helping us to meet that need.”
